I have been asked to make a bread dough slashing puck or wheel. Bread dough has to be slashed very quickly to avoid tearing it. The razor blade which does the slashing of the dough has to be held very tightly between two circular slices of wood and never fall out of the puck. The slices of wood I used in the pictures are maple which are flat sided. Initially they are held together with double sided tape and turned between centres on the lathe.. This method ensures the wooden slices are mirror images of each other and have matching centres. Once removed from the lathe the wooden sides are separated cleaned with acetone to remove any adhesive and then bolted together using 12mm M3 bolts and matching nuts as supplied by ACCU. Drilling a 3mm hole and a 6mm recess to accept the bolt head and the nut is the most difficult part of the operation as these holes must be concentric. I have decided that using a HSS Centre Drill Bit is the simplest method of drilling the two holes required thus minimising wood tear out and preserving concentricity.
